42 Matthew from Manchester, UK: I've just got the complete Brett/Holmes series on DVD off Amazon UK for £20...absolute bargain. I usually watch the episodes on a low-bitrate digital channel, with adverts every 10 minutes, so this will be a pleasure.
41 frank from knottyash liverpool: i have been a fan of Holmes for many years now, i have seen some good ones, and v ,bad ones but for JB is Sherlock Holmes, with great way he would draw you in to the case, miss you alot JB.
40 mark huett from swindon england: theirs only one sherlocck holmes it must be jeremy brett my favorite bit is in the priory school when holmes is given a cheque for getting the duke of holdernesse son back , great moment.
39 Alberto Rodriguez from Chula Vista, U.S.: Magnificent. I will be on a long journey to keep on reading his cases and captivating adventures. The show makes the fictional character come to life. It seems as if Doyle himself decided on who would portray Holmes. Thankgoodness for such and thanks to Jeremy Brett.
38 Grey Meshle from Wisconsin: I 'discovered' Sherlock Holmes when I was 14. He's captured my heart. He is such an inspiration to me; I love him with all my heart and always will. I am now 17, and just a year ago discovered the...nonparalel Jeremy Brett. He grabbed Holmes from the books, put him on, and portrayed him to the world in a beautiful way. And no, he did not 'despise' the character of Sherlock Holmes; only when he was suffering the depression from bipolar did he say things he himself said he didn't mean. Read 'Bending the Willow" by David Stuart Davies! Wonderful book! Here is a quote from Brett concerning Holmes:
I no longer feel threatened by Holmes, in fact I really enjoy playing him. Holmes is an upholder of the law, and he has a magnetism and mental genius that have been compulsive for people throughout the last hundred years. I was astounded when I realized how attractive he is to them (women). You'd never suspect it for one moment from the books. Girls long to seduce him. I do know that the team at Granada Studios are the finest. To everyone who has worked on these films of 'Sir Arthur Conan Doyle' 's stories in the past decade, only one word can express how I feel: Bravo! Holmes has finally given me recognition as a real actor, not just an aging pretty face."
We miss you Jeremy! Long live your memory!
37 Franklin Rice from San Angelo, Texas: I love the SH works. I have three hardbound copies of the complete works, and all the Granada TV works on cds. I have read the complete works four times and watch the Granada cds three times
36 Barney from Kent: Brett was sensational, no other Holmes has come close, including the rather wooden Rathbone. My Favourite moment- Holmes boxing the 'ruffian' in The Solitary Cyclist.
35 Xenia from Russia, Moscow: Really Mr. Jeremy Brett "personified" Sherlock Holmes perfectly. I saw TV series and always i have impression like after reading the original book. In my opiniom, he is one of some who understood character, forethought by author.
34 Pat Lazell from ESSEX ENGLAND: Having read all the Sherlock Holmes stories, I have to say the Jeremy Brett gets my vote. I was brought up on Basil Rathbone and loved them. but found the Hollywood portrayal of Watson as a dumb bumbling idiot very annoying. You do not need to have a dumb side kick to make Holmes look clever! Having read the stories Brett shows the egotistical side of Holmes perfectly, so if you want to compare read the books!
33 Dorota from Wroclaw, Poland: I do love Jeremy Brett as sherlock Holmes - unfortunately I've found out lately he is dead! That's the reason I started looking for something about his and his career. I'm pleased so many people adore his acting so many years aftre his death! So, that's the difference between film and theater!
32 Laurie from Minneapolis, MN USA: I am an Anglophile and therefore embarrassed to say that I have only recently discovered JB as Sherlock Holmes. Also a huge fan of anything of this vintage (esp. on film), I felt like I had been given a brilliant gift! Here I am in 2006 just beginning this adventure! Must just add that until now, I was a die-hard fan of Basil Rathbone as the definitive Holmes. Bravo, Mr. Brett!
31 David Z from Toledo, OH: Jeremy Brett WAS Sherlock Holmes. One of my favorite moments was an exchange in "The Devil's Foot" when he was talking to Dr. Leon Sterndale. (Sterndale) "How do you know that?" (Holmes) "I followed you." (Sterndale) "I saw no one." (Holmes) "That is what you may expect to see when I follow you." Priceless!!!!
30 Andrew from Newfoundland: I have always been a fan of anything mystery: Murder she wrote, Matlock, Columbo, Diagnosis Murder, CSI, Monk . .. etc. But when I found jeremy Bretts portrayal of Holmes (my fav of all) I was astounded, never have i seen such distinct view of holmes' character. I'm excited (practically giddy) to see the rest of the series and felt that i should thanks to not only Brett but to everyone involved with this portrayal. From now on whenever i think of Holmes I shall see Brett's Face. Thank-You!
29 Stephen Triesch from Seattle USA: Perhaps my favorite moment of all in the Granada Holmes series occurs near the beginning of "The Solitary Cyclist," in the scene where Violet Smith (Barbara Wilshere) visits Holmes at 221B. After explaining her plight, verging on tears, and sensing that Holmes still doesn't quite "get it," Violet looks Holmes in the eye and says, "Mr Holmes, please help me." The poignancy of her plea penetrates Holmes's diffidence, and he rushes to her side and takes her hand. The acting is brilliant by both Wilshere and Brett. A moment of television genius.
28 Amelia from Greece: Jeremy Brett: Magnificent, ecstatic Sherlock Holmes. Best moment: in Blue Carbuncle, the moment he sees Peterson waiting for him in the living room holding the goose. This smile portrays perfectly the peculiar but together suave personality of a genious like SH. Thank you JB.
27 Anthony smith from newport south wales uk: I did once agree that basil rathbone was sherlock holmes
until jeremy brett came along
and until the end of my days he will always be sherlock holmes forever
even when we all knew he was ill you could see it in the later episodes he was still sherlock holmes as far as i am concerned he will never ever bettered as far as the email you had from a martin smith from taipei taiwan have you sat and looked at jeremy brett basil rathbone just does not compare plus most of the movies are just made up hollywood rubbish
long live the king jeremy brett long live the king
26 Martin Smith from Taipei Taiwan: There can and will only be one Sherlock Holmes, Basil Rathbone as Holmes is simply quintessential and his sidekick of Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson will live in screen fokelore forever. They both cannot be beaten or matched.
Basil Rathbone gave to Holmes whatno one ever could, the character as it should be played. I am an absolute fan of his 14 films that were made and cannot even compare Jeremy Brett to him. Jeremy alas does not have the same character portrayal of Holmes as Rathbone did. If anyone says who do you remember as Sherlock Holmes , the answer always is Basil Rathbone, enough said I think. A genius in his own right.
25 Julia from NYC: Ostensibly Brett was Holmes, and I think that he got lost in the role, coupled with his illness he must have been conflicted with his own identity. There's a great moment when he almost falls in love , in the Master Blackmailer, he's so human so he's playing with the fact that he can become regular and human if he wants.
24 John MacDonald from Massachusetts: Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke are simply the definitive Holmes and Watson. They took the characters beyond mere plot into their essence: the relationship between a man of the mind and a man of the heart. Superb. Bravo!
23 Mary B from Cedar Hill, Texas: The best TV series EVER produced starring the finest, most handsome actor I have ever seen on film. Jeremy Brett is to Sherlock Holmes as Charlton Heston is to Moses. The pipe, the violin, the hat, the aquiline profile, the graceful bearing...he has it all. The supporting cast and the guest stars are always outstanding. The production values, music, costumes, sets and writing are always first rate. True to the spirit of Doyle's work. I love it.
22 ROB STRANGER from BEDFORDSHIRE: We should all get together to force Granada to release the huge selection of deleted footage including the bee keeper scenes from the second stain and the 4 oaks mystery. A disc of extras would be a proper tribute!
21 Sonja from Chattanooga, Tennessee: To see Jeremy Brett light up the screen with almost unconscious grace is a thrill for me that sometimes borders on addiction. I watch at least an episode a day since purchasing all the episodes online and can still always manage to pick up something fresh in his acting. Not only is Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes, but now forever in my mind Sherlock Holmes has become Jeremy Brett.
20 Stacy from Ukraine: Sherlock Holmes is one of the best characters, and Jeremy Brett portraying him is wonderful and unbelievable. I think what he has done for Holmes is comparable only with Doyle's work. I have a lot of favourite moments in the series, one of them to learn with Dr. Watson that Holmes is alive.
19 Chamini from USA: One of the best acting I ever seen!!!!
He is a great actor and my favourite actor. Unfortunaltely he is no more.
18 GAIL from OXFORD: Jeremy Brett is THE QUINTESSENTIAL, THE DEFINITIVE, THE *ONLY* 'SHERLOCK HOLMES!' Enough said!
17 Rhian Price from South wales: I am 14 I have read all the Sherlock Holmes novels and Jeremy Brett was and is still the best Sherlock Holmes - he is unbeatable. I haven't got a favorite episode because they are all brilliant. I adored Jeremy Brett in My Fair Lady and adore him as Holmes and I will always adore him.
JEREMY BRETT IS THE DIFFINITIVE SHERLOCK HOLMES!!
16 Jane Parkinson from 11 Thelwall Rd,Sale Moor,Sale M33 2RR: My favourite has to be when Holmes informs Watson he has a brother, the look of surprise is priceless. Then he takes him to meet Myecroft, at the Famous Club. They stand and look out of the window at a man, and go through what he is wearing and what he did, he is a widow, with 2 children, it leads to a further mystery. The show is not about the soldier, it is about a foreign gentleman, and excellent it is too
15 Emma from Bishop's Stortford: I love Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes he got right under the skin of the character and made it his own; my favourite episode I think would have to be The Musgrave Ritual although I thoroughly enjoy them all. I must say I think Edward Hardwicke is the best Watson and compliments Jeremy Brett's Holmes perfectly!
14 Helen from Menai Bridge, North Wales: My favourite is 'The Blue Carbuncle' which was on just recently. Jeremy Brett was, without doubt, the best Sherlock Holmes in my book. It's just such a shame he died before he realised his ambition of filming the whole Sherlock Holmes cannon.
13 teresa from wolves: the best Holmes as got to be the classic Hound of the Baskervilles. Jeremy Brett is unbeatable as Holmes except by Basil Rathbone but it is extremely close
12 Doug from Coventry: When Watson found Holmes was alive after his fall and fainted.
11 Ken Trotter from Bangor. Co Down: Best Detective series ever, think so much of it, I recently purchased the entire series, from 'online'
sources, now I can watch it at my leisure, but keep on showing it, pity you couldn't delete the commercials however
10 Cassidy from Coventry: I MISS JEREMY BRETT :(
Although I loved Colin Jeevans as Lestrade, HE ROCKS! Colin Jeavons is the best Lestrade ever!
The best thing that ever happened to me was visiting Granada studios in Manchester where I actually got to see the set, that was used during the TV filming of the series. I wish that the studio would open up again, ah well... Please Granada play more Sherlock Holmes, we all miss Mr. Brett. The quintessental Sherlock Holmes.
9 Gillian from Robson: Hi ,
I believe that jeremy brett comes 2nd to the best Sherlock homles, The very best one is Basil Rathbone, even though it is avery old version of sherlock i believe that Jeremey Brett still comes 2nd to Basil Rathbone, as he acts a bit like him aswell.
8 Joanne.R.Waite from Salford Manchester: I LOVE JEREMY BRETT, HE WAS THE GREATEST, SUARVE & SOPHISTICATED... I SHALL REMEMBER HIM FOREVER.. & SHALL BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL! REST IN PEACE JEREMY.
7 Jay from India: Jeremy Brett is Sherlock in flesh & blood
6 Kim Sessions from Mesa, Arizona: It is because of Jeremy Brett and all the episodes of the Sherlock Holmes which have really captured my interest and to realize that life is Elementary!
5 Annette J-C from Sunderland: The intensity with which Jeremy Brett portrays Holmes is quite compelling.
I was intrigued to learn that JB actually despised the character of Holmes. Specifically, the sleuth's dark, brooding air; which he himself conveyed with such smouldering finesse. Irresistible.
4 Angela Robinson from Runcorn: Jeremy Brett is the definitive Sherlock Holmes. I just think the series is amazing and because its the first one, thats not been on video for years, I haven't seen it since its original airing on ITV.
3 Gary Bostock from Wigan: It is true to the spirit and content of the original books.,Without doubt Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes
2 Sheila Courtney from Hull: I love murder mystery stories and the Sherlock Holmes stories are some of the best.
1 Debbie Morgan from Gloucester: Saturday afternoons are boring, Don't want to watch footballers scoring, Want a channel with tales intriguing, Of Sherlock beating clues misleading
