Classic Television News & Features: GONE: Columbo's Peter Falk

It is sad news that legendary bumbling detective Columbo is dead. Peter Falk (1927-2011) sadly passed away today following a battle with alzeihmers and dementia.

His character was a shabby and ostensibly absent-minded police detective lieutenant, who had first appeared in the 1968 film Prescription: Murder.

Columbo first appeared in 1968 when Falk starred with Gene Barry in a ninety-minute TV pilot about a highly-skilled, laid-back detective. Columbo eventually became part of an anthology series entitled, The NBC Mystery Movie, along with McCloud and McMillan And Wife.

The detective series then became huge on NBC and globally from 1971 to 1978, and returned then occasionally between 1989 to 2003.

Just one more thing ... Falk was an accomplished artist and a huge fan of chess.
